the [neverending] engagement story

The Proposal (12.23.05)

After 8 years, Todd had to go to great lengths to surprise Jamie since she was certainly expecting something to happen. The couple met up in the Columbus area to be home with their families for Christmas. The Friday before Christmas, December 23rd, Jamie asked Todd to have dinner at her family’s home. Not realizing it, Jamie set the stage for Todd by asking her Dad to grill the chicken (in the snow!)… Todd then had a chance to ask him to marry his daughter. Todd also managed to clue in Jamie’s Mom without her finding out! As the two watched pointless TV with her parents, Jamie certainly didn’t expect anything to happen that night.

A gift for his brother-in-law, Andy, didn’t arrive before he left Cleveland… since they waited until almost midnight to go anywhere to pickup the replacement Monopoly… Wal-Mart was the only option. There is certainly no better way to throw the expectation of a proposal out the window than to take a romantic trip to your local Wallyworld. Since Todd’s family lived much closer to the store and it was so late, Jamie planned to stay at their house that night.

After arriving at the house, as usual, she settled in to watch a movie with his sister, Kristen. Jamie was slightly suspicious when Todd asked her to follow him, but all questions were answered when she saw the room in turmoil and he asked for her help wrapping presents. This was a totally believable scenario.

Tired, Jamie first went to get ready for bed before she tackled Todd’s wrapping dilemma. She returned to the room, and finished wrapping the random gift he started to wrap when she unexpectedly left the room! Todd then asked her to wrap the gift laying on the bed that he thought was for his Dad. She asked to make sure she could check and then claimed that nothing was inside. Todd replied, “Oh, I’m pretty sure there is something in there…”. Jamie noticed a picture of them from a formal in 1998 at the bottom of the box. Thinking she had accidentally found one of her Christmas presents, she closed the box immediately. Todd told her she could open it… she was still thinking it was just an early gift.

What she found was a scrapbook page telling her she had always had his heart… when she pulled back the paper at the bottom of the page, Jamie saw a photo of Todd on one knee with a “sticker diamond” and the infamous question in his handwriting.

She looked over at him and completely missed the fact he was actually on one knee with a very real diamond ring in his hand. She heard, “I’ve always loved you” --- missed the entire middle part --- “Will you marry me?” Jamie (surprisingly) totally missed the ring and threw her arms around him saying “Yes, I love you so much!”. When she sat back and restored her vision, Todd held out the ring again… Jamie was so surprised by the ridiculously gorgeous ring he was holding that she is rumored to have said, “Oh Sh…”. Jamie took the ring and then rejoined Earth saying things like... “Oh my gosh, you’re on one knee… oh my gosh, we’re engaged… oh my gosh, you tricked me!”... You get the point. After her last realization, “I’m allowed to put it on?!?”… Jamie donned the ring. By this time, it was technically Christmas Eve day (about 3am).

The newly engaged coupled headed downstairs where Jamie got to hear from Andy & Kristen that she had indeed been tricked and they had known all along. They told her about his fake call to her mom about being late for dinner because he had been wrapping presents… explained how meticulous they had been making the room appear to be a Todd wrapping disaster area! All of it was a set-up! While Kristen admitted she wouldn’t sell him out if he hadn’t thought of the idea, she was more than excited to admit that her brother truly amazed her with tons of great ideas… this being the only one that wouldn’t have resulted in Jamie saying “Yes, I’ll marry you” before the ring even made an appearance.
